Growing into Giving
When you consider all the personal benefits of doing volunteer work, one could almost consider it a selfish pursuit. However, I prefer to see it as the perfect symbiotic relationship.
For thousands of years the yogis have promoted the benefits of ‘volunteer’ work as a path to self-realisation. ‘Karma yoga’ is the practice of selfless service and giving, leading to peace, equanimity and higher awareness. Indeed the art of giving is inherent and regarded as part of daily life in many...

I’m planning a bar camp
Social media tools are great options for communications professionals and if they’re used well they can begin conversations, generate business, provide low-cost options for engagement and act as publicity tools.
I know people doing great things with social media – clued-up people who are furthering the reputations of their businesses and organisations by being open to sharing, being creative and going beyond their job descriptions – but I want to know more.
That’s why I’m...

I’m about to lose control and I think I like it
When I introduce the idea of social media tools to clients they almost always ask, “but isn’t it risky?”
They’re usually worried that by putting their business online in a social media setting that they’ll be defamed in some way, lose control of their messages and have their reputation ruined within three clicks of a mouse.
In the world of social media, you’re not able to control the talking but you do have the right of reply, which can begin a very interesting conversation...

Giving as good as you get
Giving – whether it’s time, money or skills – is always important for a healthy society but especially now that the economic downturn has shone a spotlight on New Zealand’s great need.
It’s no longer enough to chuck a few coins in the street collection buckets we see most Fridays. Although every cent counts, sustained, planned giving is far more powerful because it allows the organisations receiving your money, time or skills to use them strategically, where they’re most needed long-...

Online communities and giving
One of the coolest sites I’ve seen recently was done by the RSA.
www.anzacpoppy.com is an online community for remembering and celebrating the ANZACs (that is in no way associated with Ideas Shop). And it’s a great example of an online community done well because it’s about the people, not the organisation.
The RSA has shown that communication with key audiences needs to be consistent but also needs to evolve.
The key feature of...

Downright nosey? Then you could make a great interviewer
What makes a good interviewer? In the end it comes down to instinct, being interested in people and downright nosiness – if you’ve got that, you’re away. However, if you aren’t naturally inclined to acquiring vast amounts of information from people you meet in work, at parties or at the bus stop then here are a few tips to start you off.
Choosing a venue. I prefer to do one-to-one interviews and avoid anyone else tagging along, even if it’s the account manager. Most...

Public relations, communications, comms…
By Guy Randall
I was having a discussion with a colleague the other day about the term ‘public relations’. She had noticed that a magazine article about protecting reputation made no mention of the important role that employee communications play in supporting an organisation’s reputation.
Combining all aspects of communications is essential to an effective strategy so our discussion got me thinking about...
